New workflows for High Content Screening in Galaxy presented at HMC conference

The complexity and sheer volume of image data, especially from high-content screening (HCS) experiments involving cell lines or other organisms, pose significant challenges towards managing and analysing this data efficiently. Well-defined image processing tools and analysis pipelines are required that align with the FAIR principles – ensuring they are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable across different domains. Riccardo Massei from Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research and member of NFDI4BIOIMAGE presented his workflows in Galaxy at the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration Conference.

Imaging is essential in life sciences, helping scientists study everything from molecules to entire organisms. However, high-content screening (HCS) experiments, which produce a huge amount of data, make it challenging to store, manage, and analyze images effectively. NFDI4BIOIMAGE helps address these challenges by creating tools to organize, process, and share HCS image data. Riccardo Massei from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) and colleagues presented Galaxy workflow solutions at the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC) Conference.

By using platforms like Galaxy, which integrates tools like CellProfiler and connects with systems like OMERO and IDR (Image Data Resource), scientists can create automated workflows for image analysis. These workflows enrich images with metadata and make them easy to find, ensuring data integrity and supporting collaboration. Riccardo demonstrated a workflow that manages zebrafish and cell line images, automatically adding metadata and simplifying data retrieval and analysis. This approach aligns with FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable), making data easier to share and contributing to scientific advancement.
